RAMBLIN’ with Helen...
I hope all of you enjoyed the wonderful spring weather we have been having, but like everything else, “all good things must come to an end”, and as I write this monthly visit on 4/22, it is much cooler, with rain being predicted; along with WET SNOWFLAKES possible on Sunday! One good thing about this is it won’t last…and it will help more beautiful spring flowers to bloom!
I’m very sorry that information regarding our April 24th Jamboree with Lake Effect as the featured band, wasn’t in the newsletter last month, but I didn’t receive any confirmed information until after the newsletters were received and Neil called our president regarding why it wasn’t mentioned. Also, before our meeting on Sun., April 10th, I made 4 phone calls to verify that the VFW Post was available to us on the 24th, and was assured that it was. Due to an “error” on their part, this proved to be not so, and an alternate location at the VFW was checked out by Pete Carr, who decided it would be satisfactory, providing our nice weather continued! As I write this, it doesn’t appear that will be the case, BUT we all know the percentage of accuracy with the weathermen! I am sorry to have to miss this event, but my granddaughter, her husband and two little boys from Rhode Island will be visiting for the weekend. I haven’t seen them since last October, so want to spend all the time possible with them – “little ones” change so fast! Those who do attend are assured a super, super show, and hope it was a success. (I’ve seen our publicity in various newspapers, so hope others have also.)
When Carl Leege renewed his membership, he sent his usual interesting letter and kind remarks regarding the newsletter. He says Clara who will be 88 on April 15th, is failing, and he is slowing down, but I have a feeling they still dance every change they get!!
A big THANK YOU to Dennis Crawford and Bob Wright for their MOST GENEROUS DONATIONS towards postage included with their renewals. Bob wrote he hasn’t been able to attend any functions due to heart problems, but hopes to join us real soon. We sincerely hope you can Bob – our thoughts and prayers are with you.
I received
copies of the Jan.-March and April-June Southern Tier Bluegrass Association newsletters, and folks, how professional looking they are!! Their new editor, PATRICK
MOORE is to be commended on a super, super job!! To cut down on cost and losses, they
have gone to quarterly issues, rather than monthly, and if renewals aren’t received by a
schedule agreed upon, newsletters will not be mailed to that individual. At various times, we
have considered doing a newsletter every other month, but most felt to many things would be
missed, and as the saying goes – “out of sight, out of mind”, might relate to longer periods
between contact. Our bylaws set our schedule of mailing to members, and I feel our renewals
on a timely basis is excellent, most of the time. Last month, NO ONE was removed for not
renewing! Please check your mailing label, and if circled in color, it is time to renew. I
am continuing Thayle’s procedure of including a personal note to anyone scheduled to be
removed from the list the month prior to doing so, and find this special effort in many cases
works!! Again, folks, you don’t have to cut-up your newsletter to put your renewal on the
application form. If no changes, just send your check, and any changes can be put on a
blank piece of paper.
To Bob Hayden, thanks for furnishing the map for the new location for our ANNUAL PICNIC– mark your calendar and plan to attend.
To Olive Loucks, Donna Walter, and Mary Carr, thanks for your phone calls – I always enjoy visiting with each of you.
Joy Crouch is back“on line” after her computer made many visits to the computer doctor – good to see your name in my messages again Joy.
I’ve been in touch with our former long-time member John Hornyak regarding another long-time former member Ed Horton, and it is good to report he is slowly making some progress, but will be in the hospital for a long time. Please keep him in your prayers, and cards can be sent to: Edwin Horton, % Mary Imogene Bassett Hospital, Room 545A, Cooperstown, NY. 13326.
THANK YOU to ALL who bought GOODIES at the Bake Sale sponsored by Cato Star #234 last month – it was a huge success! I had an email on Monday from Sharon Foultz wanting to know if I could get her the recipie for the Breakfast Bars she bought, as one of her day-care boys wanted his mother to make some for him – they were so good. Luck was with me, as I was the one who had brought them to the sale, so Sharon has it.
It was so good to see PEG and JERRY MILLER at the meeting, and the material they had been storing for CNYBA is now at the lodge rooms, and the agreed amount of a donation to the lodge from our association has been made. Jerry, keep on getting better – you really have come along!
A different lady printed our newsletter last month, as the one who usually does – Jennifer – was away at a seminar, thus the error with the front page..you all know how it“bugs” me when this happens, and I am still “fummin” over it, but does help a bit that it wasn’t my fault!
Please take the plea on the front page regarding our festival to heart and volunteer. It’s success depends on EACH of YOU… Until our next visit – (thanks to the STBA newsletter) – How many Bluegrass Players does it take to screw in a light bulb? Five (5) – One (1) to turn the light bulb, and four (4) to complain that it is electric!
