Ramblin' with Helen By Helen Weldon

I hope our monthly "visit" finds each of you with fond memories of your Thanksgiving festivities, and looking forward to the beautiful Holiday Season ahead. I'm sorry I wasn't able to be at our Annual Christmas Party, and really missed seeing THE SALMON RIVER BOYS, one of our performing bands; and one of my favorites.

Early in Nov., I had a phone call from LOREN TEACHOUT, a member of that band, telling me of the serious condition of his mother, EMMA TEACHOUT, who was in St. Joseph's Hospital. I called Loren on 11/29 and was so thankful to learn she had improved and is now at the Hallmark Nursing Centre for rehab. Since her length of stay is uncertain, I'm asking you to please send cards to: MRS. EMMA TEACHOUT, 4431 U.S. Rte. 11, Pulaski, N.Y. 13142. She has an unknown type of infection in her spine which results in a lot of pain and made it impossible for her to be mobile by herself. She is now able to get in and out of bed, use a walker, and with medication, able to tolerate the pain. Loren said thru the years his Mom had been sure to take a calcium supplement, but no one ever said you need Vitamin D to make it work as it should. I learned this also thru my last bone density test and blood work as a follow-up, so am now taking 800 mg. of a Vitamin D Supplement daily. (Just passing this along in case some of you aren't getting the calcium supplement fortified with Vitamin D.)

A special THANK YOU to LOIS ARTLIP, for her generous gift of a roll of stamps when she renewed her membership for two years. They will be put to good use in sending cards, and this time of year, CHRISTMAS GREETINGS to our sick and shut-in members. THANKS also to BILL UFFLEMAN for a book of stamps, and to those who include a SASE when sending their renewals. Just another reminder, if you don't want to cut-up your newsletter, just send your check, and any changes on a piece of paper; as I have all the information needed in my card file.

Speaking of the newsletter, with the help of my daughter, we are doing the Dec. issue due to THAYLE not feeling "up" to doing it. I wish I could write something more positive, but she spent Thanksgiving in Community General Hospital; being taken there on Wed., and came home on Friday. While there, they repeated the procedure she had the week before drawing fluid off her stomach. While there, her doctor made arrangements for her to have what they hope will help her liver to function. If things go as planned, she will undergo this procedure on Wed., 12/3 at St. Joseph's Hospital. I ask you all to keep THAYLE IN YOUR PRAYERS and MAIL GOING to her address, 128 Fleming St., Auburn, N.Y. 13021. There is some GOOD NEWS at that address the ramp is built, and Roberta used it when she brought Thayle home from the hospital. This will be a big help to her when she has to go out to her many doctor appointments.

For SOME MORE GOOD NEWS, when I mailed last month's newsletters, I sent a personal reminder (as Thayle does) to those names that would be removed with that issue, and want to share an answer I received from a long-time member, STU JOHNSON of Beaver Falls, N.Y. "Dear Helen, I'm sorry that I have been a bit negligent about renewing as my wife and I always liked to get the newsletter and go to as many events as we could. Unfortunately, my wonderful wife, Donna died on Jan. 7th. She always took care of all such things. Things have improved for me as I have just been married to the widow of my best friend from high school. She is also named Donna and now loves Bluegrass too! Stu." Needless to say, I sent them a card of congratulations, and now folks do you see why I say, "I think of each of you as family, and enjoy doing membership, "Sunshine Gal" cards and writing this Ramblin!" Letters like this makes it all worthwhile, and do you suppose there is still hope for me to find someone?? (only kidding..).

I had a phone call on 11/22 from PETER HOYSIC's daughter MARY, telling me they nearly lost her Dad due to hemorrhaging, but did a colonnoscopy, and caught the cancer in time. He is now home, and I had a nice visit with him. The real purpose of the call was to let me know they wouldn't be coming to our Christmas Party as a family, due to Peter's surgery, and another daughter who is in the hospital, and had three surgeries for cancer. PLEASE KEEP THEM IN YOUR PRAYERS, and send "FUNNY" CARDS to 7396 N. Centenary Rd., Sodus, N.Y. 14551; or email him, as he told me he does read some of them; gutch@computer_connection.net. I do my best to send him some pretty good ones!!

I had a nice letter from BIBIANE, telling me that she and GEORGE HALL had a good flight down, direct to Orlando with no transfer; and George's son Mike picked them up and took them to Leesburg, which is about 40 miles from the airport. It is in the high 80's, and they are playing and pickin' as often as they can. Enjoy that weather folks, it's 36 degrees here and everything is WHITE! BILL SZABO sent a card saying they were in Bellview, south of Ocala, cleaning out Ruth's trailer as she has sold it. They visited GILLIE ROWE, who lives there, and said they would be heading north soon. THANKS for the card Bill, and hope your trip home was a safe one. I have visited with MARY CARR several times, and she is doing the same, along with slowly "healing" from having some teeth pulled. The VanDUSEN'S HAVE A LITTLE "BUNDLE OF BLUE" at their home, something I just knew they would do again. Those "little ones" are so fortunate to be cared by them, and best to you folks as you care for this little boy.

Elsewhere in this newsletter you will find an article regarding OFFICERS FOR THE YEAR 2004-2005, and I ASK EACH OF YOU to read it, give some serious thought and then ACT IF ASKED. I am most sincere when I say "I'M DEPENDING ON SUPPORT FROM MANY". THANK EACH OF YOU, in advance.

Well, guess this is enough "Ramblin'" for this visit. I WISH EACH OF YOU A MOST WONDERFUL HOLIDAY SEASON spent with family, friends and may January's visit find our sick members all improving. Until next time, remember: Each day comes bearing its own gifts. Untie the ribbons.

Helen

LAST SUNDAY OF THE MONTH: (Except Dec.) An acoustic jam session is held at the main interpretive building of the WATERMAN CONSERVATION CENTER, Hilton Road, APALACCHIN, N.Y. from 1 to 4 p.m. Musicians of all abilities are welcome. For directions, call: (607) 625-2221.

"Card of Thanks" What a wonderful surprise I had on Saturday, November 8!!! My daughter, Roberta, had mentioned briefly that I was going to have some company at 2:00pm and that I had better get dressed (I usually hang around in a nightshirt). At 2:00 the following friends walked through my door with instruments in hand: OneSong, Ed & Cathy Campbell & Shelly, John & Maryan VanDusen, Helen Weldon, Peter Carr, Frank Colabufo, and Chris. The music was absolutely marvelous and between laughter and tears the next few hours were very uplifting. Snacks and pies were enjoyed by all. With video recorder in hand, John VanDusen made a very memorable tape of the event. Thank you so very much to all of you. God Bless You all. Thayle

THANKS from Jim and Ryan Meyer: We would like to say THANK YOU to all the folks who came to the jams in Sennett.and say to those who never made it - you'll never know what you missed. We all had a great time - the coffee, cookies and comradary was the best - there are some very fine pickers in Central New York and we are pleased to have had them sit in the circle night after night. Especially the night that Dale brought a distant relative to the jam with him - Ricky Scaggs!!! What a night we had. With the snowbirds heading for warmer weather..(take me with you!)..and the cold weather on its way - based on last year's turn out during the winter months it was a decision we had to make - Although the Sennett Vol. Fire Dept. is over $1000 dollars richer thanks to all the donations that went into the pot..!! I think they really appreciated us being there each Tuesday night!!!

OFFICERS for 2004-2005 It's that time of years again selection of officers to be elected in April and assume office in September. Needed to be elected to succeed themselves or be replaced are: President, Vice President, Secretary, Treasurer and two board of directors for a term of three years. Our president, Bob Hayden who has made it known that he will not continue to serve another term, appointed Ray Crouch and Neil Shortsleff on a nominating committee. He asked me to be the chairman, and after much thought, pro and con, have decided to accept the challenge. Being a charter member, having always taken an active part by serving in many different offices, editor of the newsletter for several years, and serving as membership chairman and "Sunshine Gal" since 1996, our association means an awful lot to me. I don't want to see it "fade away" as some long-time ones have done the past few years. FOLKS, it is YOUR ASSOCIATION, don't wait to be asked to serve, let Ray, Neil or myself know you are available. For those of you whom may have already served, and are asked again, PLEASE give it some very serious consideration before saying no. Twenty-eight years of hard work, resulting in a membership of over 300, our own CD, 5 successful Bluegrass Festivals behind us, and the 6th well on its way to being finalized, are only a few of the accomplishments we MUST continue and see grow. I have faith with the co-operation of the "OLD" and the "NEW" members working together we can achieve that goal. It was 15 years ago this Nov., that my late husband, Dick, one of the 3 co-founders of CNYBA, started what sadly has grown to be our own "Bluegrass Heaven" up yonder, with far too many of our hard working, dedicated members having joined him. This alone, is reason enough for us to carry on CAN WE COUNT ON YOU? I sincerely hope so. (Helen)

Congratulations and HAPPY BIRTHDAY to our wonderful membership/sunshine chairman, Helen Weldon on January 3, 2004 on her 75th birthday. We all hope you have a wonderful and happy day and that you have many more, as you well deserve the best. You are loved by many and I am sure that they would like to let you know by sending a birthday card at 2446 Hillview Drive, #17, Cato, N.Y. 13033. Thayle

MC's NEEDED Our beloved MC Vernon Loucks is "stepping down" after our Christmas Party, and we assure you Vernon, you will be a very "hard act" to follow!! If you are interested in helping us out in this capacity at our events and festival, please speak to our President, Bob Hayden, or call him at: 315 673-1313, or send an email to: rhayden357@aol.com.
