HAPPY FATHERS DAY and Congratulations to anyone or their family member who Graduated from school and/or college.

Did everyone see the two great pictures in the Cayuga Edition of The Post Standard featuring the Jam session "Hot Time at the Firehouse", held every Tuesday evening in Sennett from 7pm - ?. One week the picture was of Alan Caster and Joe Greco playing their instruments and singing. The second week's picture was of Tom Russell playing his instrument and singing. Nice pictures and nice write-up. I sure hope everyone saw them. Stop by for a fun evening of good music and bluegrass friends. Their attendance is growing - so come be part of the crowd.

It was brought to my attention that one of our members was going to be charged extra postage for his newsletter because it was stapled at the bottom. I checked with the Post Office and there can be a charge for stapled documents. I had no knowledge of this and I hope that no one else has had this problem. Future newsletters will be taped, to avoid this problem. Thanks, Thayle

Many THANKS to Betsy Keough for being responsible for taking pictures and keeping our photo album up-to-date over the past years. This job is time consuming, but lots of fun and Betsy enjoyed doing it.
^^^^^^^^^^^^
THANKS to John and Martha Crouch for taking over the responsibility of being our photographers - I know that they will have a lot of fun doing it. When you see John or Martha approaching you with camera in hand, give them a big bluegrass smile, as your picture will probably be on one of the pages in our photo album.

I was very pleased to hear from Options for Independence concerning the building of a ramp for me. I am eligible and third on the list and should have a ramp sometime this year. I am very grateful for that. When completed I will be able to drive the motorized Rascal outside and get around outdoors ñ really looking forward to that!! Thayle

Even though Memorial Day weekend was rainy and cool, Ed and Cathy's Jamboree at LaFayette Apple Festival Grounds was well attended and everyone had a good time. It takes more than a few raindrops to dampen true bluegrass fans. The music was fantastic, the food delicious, and the fellowship most enjoyable.

Ramblin' with Helen By Helen Weldon
I hope each of you who had plans for the Memorial Day Weekend with loved ones were able to enjoy them. The weather report wasn't all that encouraging, BUT that is something we can't control. I also hope and am sure that many enjoyed the "Flying Fingers Bluegrass Jam" hosted by Ed and Cathy Campbell. I want to thank Ed for his most generous offer to see that I got there and back and had a place to stay. Unfortunately due to prior commitments and an unforseen problem I couldn't accept, but have definitely accepted his same offer for our festival. Thanks Ed for your thoughtfulness and I do appreciate it so much.
By the time you read this our Annual Picnic will be in the past but am sure all who attended had a most enjoyable time with lots of good food, music and fellowship. Thanks to whomever cooked the ham.
Received Soc Nellis's answers to the trivia names listed in our may newsletter and he had all but one correct (#11 was not the Smokey Mt. Boys). Of course as usual, you were the only one to reply and thanks again for doing so. The correct answers were: 11 - The Wilburn Bros.; 12 - George Strait; 13 - Freddy Fender; 14 - Bobby Bare,; 15 - Ray Pillow; 16 - Hank Snow; 17 - Johnny Cash; 18 - Johnny Paycheck; 19 - John Hartford and 20 - The Crook Bros. See the end of this article for the June names.
Maxine Cleaveland and daughter Sandra moved May 1st into an apartment at Brighton Towers, #1704, 821 E Brighton Ave., Syracuse, NY, 13205. Maxine, we wish you and Sandra the best and hope you are enjoying your new home.
Evelyn Plucinik had cataract surgery the end of May and we hope all is well with you. Prior to this she had the task of cleaning out her Mother's apartment after her passing. Like lots of us, Evelyn says her Mother saved everything. I know all too well how that goes as I did that for my mother and mother-in-law and vowed my girls wouldn't have to do all that for me. Well, guess what folks, I find myself doing just the opposite....and my worst thing is to save boxes. However, moving from a 13 room house to a 3 room apartment has curtailed it a lot. Dot Malouin emailed that her husband Al had his 80th birthday and is nearly blind. Dot is in a wheelchair but still does crafts and quilting with friends. Each Christmas when I put the Christmas ornaments she gave me on my refrigerator, it brings back such pleasant memories of many of us getting to know the Malouins when they came down for the tapings at WCNY.
Via the email circuit, I understand that John Wilmot had knee surgery on May 12th. Sorry I didn't know about it sooner John, as would have sent you a card; but so glad to hear you are doing fine.
By the time you read this, Mary Anne Burns is scheduled to have or has had cataract surgery. You are in our thoughts and prayers that it was or will be successful, Mary Anne, as you have a busy time ahead with the handling of the advance reservations for our 5th Annual Apple Valley Bluegrass Festival, and your dedication at working so many, many hours at the gate during it.
Special thank you to B. Joanne Baxter for the 50 stamps she included with her renewal; to Betty Humphrey for the 4 additional stamped envelopes she included with one to send her renewal card and receipt for payment back to her; and to those of you who also included SASE's with your renewals. They are all greatly appreciated and helpful to our association. I am once again running low on BLANK note cards to return renewals, so if any of you don't use the ones you get sent to you asking for donations, I could and would appreciate them. I use all I get, but in between getting then, there are times when I have to buy some. THANKS!!
William Kretchner renewed for two years and included a note that he had some heart problems this past year, but is now doing OK. He didnít make the festival last year (and we missed you Bill), but hopes to see us all this year, and we hope so too.
Had a beautiful sympathy card from Winnie and David Jones and Winnie included a note that their trip home from this winter's sojourn was delayed as David's brother was in a motorcycle accident. They were waiting for him to be well enough for the doctors to decide when and where his rehabilitation would take place. Our thoughts and prayers are with you both and also with your brother David, for a speedy recovery.
Our editor Thayle, my dear friend and buddy email back and forth many times a week and only wish we could do something to make her painful leg and hip go away. I understand that the ramp plans are progressing and perhaps she will tell you more about it elsewhere in this newsletter.
Our revised by-laws were accepted at our May meeting and are in the process of being copied (at least I think they are) so watch for further details on how to get a copy as I feel each member should have one. Remember, it is your organization.....if you don't have plans for Father's Day, June 15th, the Cato Masons are having a pancake breakfast that day from 8-1 and would be glad to see you.
By now I am sure that many of you are saying "Shut up, Helen", so here are the next 10 trivia names to test your imagination: 21 - FISH GILL; 22 - PATTY HATEMORE: 23 - MEL AVE: 24 - WEBSITE PIERCE DOT.COM 25 - YARENT A LYNN TRACTOR: 26 - KATHY'S PATATA: 27 - MOSQUITO DAVIS: 28 - TRAVIS THE TWIT: 29 - MIGHTY STUPID: and 30 - JIM ISA LITTLE DICKENS.
Until next time, did you know - "I am" is the shortest sentence in the English language? (Perhaps I'll use it for some month's Ramblin')
Helen

BAND BIOS for the CNYBA APPLE VALLEY FESTIVAL:
"LOST TIME" is a new Central NY band with veterans from earlier bluegrass groups such as Headiní South, Pleasant Valley Bluegrass and Rosewood. This quartet includes John Short on guitar, John Burton on banjo, Perry Cleaveland on mandolin and Don Anderson the bass player. Lead and harmony vocals accent the quality of their music. The band was named in recognition of the time each member "lost" when their family and job responsibilities throughout the years made it impossible to play more often.
"BILL and MAGGIE ANDERSON", a two-piece dobro and guitar act which presents the contemporary, mellow side of bluegrass with their harmony and music presentations. They once were leaders of "Cayuga Bluegrass Works" and now they are a duo with a relaxed stage presence. They have done many gospel sets blending traditional with the newer "story songs".
"ANDY PAWLENKO and the Smokey Hollow Boys" originated 43 years ago with Andy Pawlenko playing guitar and doing lead vocals and Neil Shortslef on mandolin and singing lead/harmony. Later on they were joined by Dick DeNeve on sweet dobro, Donnie Perkins on fiddle , Bear Acker on his bass, Fred. This group always is well received by the audience because of their professional quality, not to mention an occasional, expected joke to keep the atmosphere light and full of humor. They play at several festivals throughout the "festival season". During the late fall and winter months, Andy Pawlenko and the Smokey Hollow Boys is joined by Ernie Terpening on banjo and Bud Shortslef on bass.
"LOW PROFILE" is a bluegrass band from Virginia that has been in existence since 1993 with many accomplishments to its credit. They have several self-produced recordings and have played at many festivals in the USA. They provide the listener with a unique bluegrass sound similar to that of Flatt and Scruggs and Charlie Moore. Their group includes John Donaldson on guitar and lead and harmony baritone vocals; J. B. Elliott on guitar and lead and tenor vocals; Pete Smith on smooth dobro and Harlan Baumgardner on driving banjo, lead and harmony vocals, and Rick Bohr on rock solid bass.
"THE CENTRAL CHAPTER" of the New York State Old Tyme Fiddlers Assoc., was formed and is dedicated to the preservation of the old time fiddle music that was enjoyed by our ancestors and further to promote, assist and encourage individuals of all ages to learn to play the fiddle. The organization is made up of several chapters throughout the state, totaling almost 1000 members, with the Central chapter being the oldest with about 300 members. They play benefits, nursing homes, adult homes at no charge and also for community benefits. They also hold square dances during the winter months for a nominal donation.
During the summer months there are summer concerts held at the Fiddlers Pavilion where all are invited free of charge.
Billy Lee Cox and "MASON DIXON GRASS" : Billy, a native of Delaware is the founder of Mason Dixon Grass. He is a former National Banjo champion and has developed his own technique that is uniquely his own. He sings tenor and is the lead singer of the group. He has a book out called "100 Favorite Banjo Licks" teaching banjo and how to get those tricky banjo licks. Billy also has great interaction with the audience for whom he is entertaining. Other members of the group are: Don Breeze, native Canadian, is a multi-instrumentalist playing fiddle and mandolin and sings baritone and harmony. Jeff Blevins the lead singer and bass player is also a multi-instrumentalist, playing banjo mandolin, and guitar. Jeff Spencer, the newest member plays rhythm guitar, taught by his father, and sings harmony. MDG has played on many radio, TV programs as well as doing fundraisers for the community.
James Reams & THE BARNSTORMERS have performed at blueg! rass festivals and venues from Maine to North Carolina to Indiana to Michigan. James Reams has been in NYC for the past 15 years, playing traditional bluegrass music with an old-time edge. The Barnstormers give exciting, soulful performances with powerful three part harmonies and "straight-up, no nonsence, take no-prisoners bluegrass". James powerful singing, guitar playing and song writing. James has played both old-time and bluegrass music since he was a child, influenced by his family: Mark Farrell has played bluegrass and old-time music for many years. He has joined the Barnstormers in 1998 and adds baritone vocals and handles the fiddle and mandolin chores: Carl Hayanoís tenor singing is classic bluegrass and his stand-up bass playing is rock solid. He has been with the group since 1995: Mickey Maguire plays driving banjo and contributes several original tunes to the group. He joined the group in 1998.
The "Black Diamond Bluegrass Band" started out as the Southern Tier Bluegrass Band formed by Charlie Hartman. Over the years it had turned into a "Whoís Who of the STBA". Ken Pierson on guitar has held the STBA president position many times; Bill Anderson on sweet dobro has held vice-president numerous times; Jolene Anderson on rhythmic bass has held various positions; Jim Hartman on hot banjo has been president, vice-president and secretary; and the newest member Wayne Pierson, playing mandolin and fiddle is a valuable asset to the band. In keeping with the sound of honest bluegrass music, The Black Diamond Bluegrass Band upholds the vow of passing on the tradition --the way your grandpa heard them.
Three's Company is known as "the biggest little band in bluegrass". They sing everything from bluegrass to blues which appeals to all ages and musical interests. Bernie Mason on guitar and vocals shows his love for his music through his playing and singing. Mavis Mason on bass and vocals has been singing all her life and loves singing bluegrass and country music. David Nichols on mandolin and vocals got his first instrument at the age of 8 and has been playing ever since. In 2000 he received The Council of the Arts Lifetime Achievement Award for Music. This group plays at many festivals from May to October and you can also find them picking at their campsite well into the night. They also hold "beginner" workshops and much to our delight has offered a Martin Sigma Guitar to our festival to be raffled off.
