NEWS and TIDBITS for JULY/AUGUST 2003

So as not to confuse you, this newsletter is not late. July/August has always been a combined newsletter. I hope this hasn't caused any problems with any of you. Thayle

The Marcellus Olde Home Days was well attended, despite the changeable weather and the music was very impressive and enjoyed by all who attended. The performances of the musicians emitted their love and enjoyment of olde time and bluegrass music.

Square dancing at the Foster's Barn on June 7th in Marcellus was also well attended by 50+ people - three sets on the floor at most times, including kids. The musicians who sat on straw bales on a hay wagon and played were: Jack Burns, Bob Hayden, Jacqui McCarthy, John Burns, Homer, Babiane Bouthilette, George Hall, Cora Sturge, Ray Crouch, Tork Seske, and Betsy Keough. G. Warren Clemens, caller for the Old Tyme Fiddlers, did a great job of calling. Sure hope the 15 cows in the down stairs enjoyed the festivities as much as the people attending did.

The second night of square dancing at Foster's Barn included a dish to pass supper - then the music started with about 200 in attendance. At times there were four sets on the floor. Those playing were, Pete Carr, Ray Crouch, Cora Sturge, Keith, Homer, Aaron Moen, Jacqui McCarthy, John Wilmot, Tork Seske, Bob Hayden, Jack Burns, Jeurgen Knauss, Rob, Rose, and Jim De Peyster . Again the calling was done by G. Warren Clemens. Also, a new type of "Barn Dance" was introduced to the dancers - they stood in lines and then did various steps and movements. Sounded like a lot of fun. Senator Nancy Larraine Hoffman was also in attendance and she spoke to the group on various issues. The festivities lasted "till the cows came home".

Ed Campbell had donated an aero-coup plane to the Experimental Aircraft Association in Marcellus and various people have been working on it for some time now. During the Father's Day pancake breakfast, someone taxied Ed's donated plane from the hangar where it was kept, across the field, and right up to the hangar where everyone was enjoying their breakfast. Ed sat there with a BIG GRIN on his face and was wishing he could nose it into the wind and fly it. Maybe after the FAA inspects it, he will. What a thrill that must have been! Thanks, Ed.

THANK YOU -------

Vernon and Olive Loucks are noted for their benevolence to people and organizations whom they feel are deserving. This year, as in the past, they have donated $1000 to The Central New York Bluegrass Association, Inc., with their blessings. They quoted that the bluegrass members make them feel "like family" and well loved. There are many members who can confirm this statement and we are extremely happy to have them as a member of "our family".

Thank you to Mary Anne Burns for the stamps she sent me - they were used and appreciated. Thayle

Many, many THANKS to Senator Michael Nozzolio, a member of CNYBA, and Senator Nancy Larraine Hoffman for their efforts and influence in passing the joint Legislative budget which became the State budget. Through them much needed funding was restored to schools, vocational services to disabled people, and keeping the cost of living increase for people on Social Security. All of these will offer a better quality of life to all concerned.

Again this year, as in years past, Thank You to Carol Grant for her contribution of $300 toward the hiring of the Low Profile bluegrass band from Virginia who will be playing at our festival who were requested back by popular demand.

"Thank you so very much" to CNYBA for the beautiful flower arrangement sent to me and my family for the death of my daughter, Jeanette. It was deeply appreciated. Also many thanks for cards, telephone calls and e-mails from my bluegrass family at this time. My daughter will be sadly missed by her children and family. Thank you all for caring. Thayle

The ticket prices for the afghan that Maryan VanDusen is donating to be raffled off at our festival are as follows: $1.00 for one ticket; $2.00 for three tickets and $5.00 for seven. Need not be present to win, just put your name and telephone number on the back. Drawing will be August 2, possibly at 10:00PM.

I received an e-mail from Bill Knowlton concerning Karen Skinner who lives in Central Square and who is requesting to have someone in the Syracuse area or within reasonable distance to teach her to play a hammered dulcimer. If there is anyone in our membership who would be interested in helping Karen, her e-mail address is kskinner@usadatanet.net. Thanks.

Joe LaMay's song "The Old Man Has Gone" which was written in memory of Bill Monroe won Honorable Mention in the Madison, WI songwriting competition - Bluegrass/Roots category. Congratulations Joe!

After Joe LaMay & Sherri Reese and The Genesee Rose String Band did a concert for the Livingston County Historical Society, Geneseo, NY, the curator has requested that Joe's song "Rose of the Genesee" for inclusion in their museum. They took their name - Genesee Rose String Band - from that song.

Ramblin' with Helen By Helen Weldon

I hope each of you are enjoying a beautiful, sun/clouds, cool breezy day as I am (July 10th). As the saying goes, "Killing Two Birds with One Stone", while doing my laundry, I decided it was a good time to write our "visit" since I promised our editor that I'd have it to her by the 12th.

I'm sure many of you have not heard about the unexpected passing of Thayle's daughter Jeanette on Sat., July 5th. at Strong Memorial Hospital, Rochester, NY. Besides her parents, she is survived by her children Brianna and Ryan; her fiancé, Paul Bernt of Rochester; three sisters, Valerie and Roberta from Auburn and her twin sister Colette from Alaska. and several nieces and nephews. Her brother Kenneth passed away in 1993. Calling hours were Wed., July 9th at the Langham Funeral Home, Auburn, NY and burial was at Mt. Pleasant Cemetary in Port Byron, NY on July 10th . Thanks to a member of the Cato Citizens Club I was able to go for the calling hours and tried to express my/our associations profound sorrow to Thayle and her family. Thayle's strong faith and always positive outlook was very apparent, along with the deep grief showing also. Thayle, there are no adequate words to express our true feelings, but please know we are here for you also. Expressions of sympathy may be sent to 28 Fleming St., Auburn, NY 13021.

Thanks to Betty Jane Windhausen for her pkg. of several blank cards, along with a beautiful tac musical instrument pin as a "thank-you" gift for my Ramblin' and Sunshine efforts. I do appreciate your kind words and gift, Betty Jane.

At our April meeting, member Fred Castle volunteered to have 300 copies of our revised by-laws printed. True to his word he delivered them to me in the middle of June. I am mailing them to each member as they renew, and to new members as they join. I will have them at our festival, so if you are there, please come and see me at the CNYBA booth and get your copy, thus saving postage. Thanks Fred for your most generous contribution as I know doing this was not cheap.

Along with Winnie and David Jones renewal, Winnie included a note saying they would be missing most of the festivals as they have to go back to Florida to take care of David's brother when he is discharged from rehab., following his motorcycle accident which resulted in amputation on his left leg. How lucky he is to have a brother and sister-in-law to be able to care for him; and folks we will miss you. You both, along with David's brother are in our thoughts and prayers.

As expected, "Soc" Nellis, with the help of his wife Jan is the only one to reply to Loren Teachout's Country Music Puzzle, and expressed the hope they would get a passing grade! I'd say you did OK folks as you only missed 2. The corrrect answers are: 21-Vince Gill; 22-Patty Loveless; 23-Mel Street; 24-Webb Pierce; 25-Loretta Lynn; 26-Kathy Mattea; 27-Skeeter Davis; 28-Travis Tritt; 29-Marty Stuart; and 30-Little Jimmy Dickens. Following is the final list, and good luck Soc and Jan as you guess these: 31-MIGHT A ROBIN'S EGG HATCH; 32-CHARLIE'S PRIDE AND JOY; 33-A STRING OF DRIED BEANS; 34-JOHNNY'S WRONG AND KITTY'S SICK; 35-ITCHY SCABS; 36-MARK'S CHESTNUT TREE; 37-BONNIE MALE COPE WITH US; 358-SEE JEANNIE SEE, SEE RILEY RUN, RUN RILEY RUN; 39-GEORGE'S MORGUE AND FUNERAL PARLOR; 40-TOM'S T WILL HAUL THE LOAD; 41-EATABLE EASTER RABBIT; 42-ARENIE LIKES CAMPBELL'S SOUPS (so does Glenn), and 43-JOHNNY IS ADHESIVE.

Was glad to hear that Mary Carr was able to go with Pete to a festival in PA where she reported she had a very enjoyable time. Unfortunately they were unable to go to VA to a festival because of a very badly inflamed toe. We are all very sorry to hear that, Mary.

I havení' heard how Mary Anne Burns made out with her cataract surgery, but pray it is over and was a complete success.

I would sure appreciate hearing about these things as otherwise not much sense on trying to keep writing our monthly "visit" if I have no news to report. Please remember this and call or email me. Thanks.

It was good news to hear that Donna and Bob Walter had made the trip north to their camp in Thendara after their "winter" stay in Alabama. Donna emailed "With the exception of having to buy a new air-conditioner in TN. and 2 blowouts along the way (no one hurt) the trip was uneventful". Many of us know how thoughtful, helpful and considerate this couple is and it showed again as they brought their neighbor from down in AL up with then and took her to Mass. where her son met then and took his Mom home with him. They both are glad to be back up North and are busy with Dr's appts., etc. Folks, this is just another example of the kind of people we have in our "Bluegrass Family". I saw Bob and Donna Walter for a few minutes at the calling hours for Thayle's daughter and I wish I had had more time to visit; but when you have to depend on others for transportation one has to go when the "taxi" is ready to do.

I'm truly looking forward to being at our festival from Fri. through Sun. (thanks to Ed Campbell's most generous offer, and I'm depending on it Ed) and hope to have time to visit with all of you.

A big "Thank You" to Vernon and Olive Loucks for once again presenting CNYBA with $1000 at our picnic in June. This couple's dedication, support both physical and monetary to our association only further proves to one and all how wonderful people they are. I had a call from Vernon offering to go way out of their way to come pick me up so I could go to calling hours. Folks, that meant so much to me, but as I told them, I would find a way, and I did.

I was invited to a "Shindig" at our Doodle-De-Doo's Fiddlers (Pete Hoysic) home, but due to a prior commitment had to decline. Peter, I hope you had a very successful and fun time and don't forget me, as next time hope to be able to accept.

Well folks, have run out of things to remark about, so until our next "visit" in Sept. (if I have enough material to warrant it), come to our festival, and remember: Some minds are like concrete, thoroughly mixed up and permanently set.

Helen
