RAMBLIN’ with Helen... |
SPRING HAS ARRIVED…and I hope each of you are enjoying the beautiful sunshine, warmer temperatures, the smell of fresh mowed grass, hummingbirds at your feeders, flowers blooming, etc., etc. I'm writing our “visit” while doing my “spring washing” of mattress pads and bedspreads, ready for my family from Rhode Island to arrive for the long weekend. May each of you enjoy time with loved ones and friends, and hope all took time to remember those who sacrificed their lives that we might enjoy the freedom of getting-together. May they all rest in peace.
In the May 10 th issue of the Sunday Post Standard, under the weekly birds column, there was a picture and article send in by our member Robert Sykes from Elbridge, regarding a small hawk at his feeder. Thru patience, he was able to get a picture of the back of the hawk with his head turned almost 180 degrees so it was looking forward! The writer of the column explains that hawks can do this, and owls can do even better – rotate their heads further around. He also identified it as a sharp-shinned hawk, that lives in wooded areas and feeds almost exclusively on other birds. A great picture Robert, and am sure you folks enjoy all the birds that come to your feeder. Speaking of birds, my hummingbird feeder is visited often, and love hearing they “sputter” at one another.
I am sorry not to have been able to go to the May Showcase, due to having made reservation to go to a State Visit for Eastern Stars, the other side of Rochester . However, I emailed Joy Crouch and Sharon Foultz, to find out how it went. Sharon emailed me that due to Chuck taking a bad fall while taking census, and her sinus infection, along with her allergies still “visiting” her, they weren't able to go. I sent an “E-mail Thinking of You” card to them. Joy estimated the crowd to be around 60 counting the band members, and it has to be moved to a building close by, due to the weather. She said the music was great, and all had a good time.
Each year, when B. Joanne Baxter sends her renewal, she includes a nice note telling m how busy she is, which is wonderful. She had recently been to a “Pickin-in-the Parlor” put on by Ron and Nancy OneSong and reports it was as entertaining and wonderful as always! She belongs to the Moose and Eagles, and those meetings, along with her various church activities keep her busy – and she says she's not complaining.
I'm sure many of you remember Peter Hoysic, our Doodle-Do Fiddle Player, a long-time member of CNYBA, and loved by all who know him. I, (along with Maryan and John VanDusen who took me) were invited to a surprise 90th Birthday Party for Pete on May 16 th . His real birthday was April 16th , and his family celebrated it then, so he had no idea they would do it again! His daughter Mary convinced him it was a reunion of their cousins, one of whom was celebrating a “milestone birthday. Peter said that was nice, and that they certainly could celebrate it without him, but Mary told him no – he had to go, and he did! All of his children were there, along with his brothers, sister-in-law, other relatives and his late wife Betty's children. It was held at Forman Park in Pultneyville , N.Y. in the House Pavilion, so even tho there were two heavy downpours during the afternoon, we were inside, enjoying delicious food, good music and fellowship. Peter, we all hope you enjoy many more birthdays – at least to 99 like the poem on the tables said.
I received a membership from Thomas Russell, (he used to belong), along with a note telling me that while watching and listening to Bill Light at a jam session, it prompted him to send dues for 2 years membership and a very generous donation gift of appreciation to CNYBA. He went on to say it is because of CNYBA that he can enjoy the music and play it himself at this stage of his life, and ended by “May God Bless One and All”. Welcome back Thomas, and hope you enjoy many more jams, and I agree Bill is one whom can really entertain us.
On the 23 rd of May, I received an email from Carl Carlson, a member of the South East Bluegrass Association, located in Atlanta , GA. , telling me about a free website he has put together – www.bluegrassonthetube.com . This site currently has 250 videos in the library and new ones are added weekly. I sent this email to our editor, and suggested it would be a good filler” and urge you all to check it out. I intend to do so when I have time, and will email Carl after I do it.
I sent a Birthday Card from CNYBA to our dear friend Olive Loucks who celebrated her 91 st birthday on May 23 rd . Both Olive and Vernon have health problems, so please keep them in your prayers and know that mail sent to: 629 Lakeport Rd. , Chittenango , N.Y. 13037 would be most welcomed.
One day, a couple of weeks ago, my dear friend and sister of the late Andy Pawlenko, Mary Phillips and I enjoyed lunch at the newly opened Irish Pub here in Cato. For those who enjoyed going over to the Cato Hotel to do more “jamin” after our monthly meetings in Cato (they did this for years) you would not know it now. New owners have refurbished it to look like an authentic Irish Pub, and the food was delicious. I highly recommend it to anyone who might be this way and want a nice place to have lunch or full-course dinner. They have applied for their license for alcoholic beverages, and the menu changes often. Thank you TED, for that delicious lunch, as as always, Mary and I caught up on families, grandchildren, great-grandchildren and CNYBA happenings.
WELCOME to new members: Dennis A. Tanner, Maryland, N.Y.; Dave Underwood, Camillus, N.Y. and John Reygers, Brewerton, N.Y. and THANK YOU to Thomas Russell, Frank Allen and B. Joanne Baxter for your generous donations towards CNYBA expenses when you sent your membership renewals, and to Eugene and Evelyn Pritchard for including 12 extra stamps when they renewed. As I say every month, they all help so much, either for our treasury, or the stamps for me to mail back dues cards and receipts.
I recently had a nice long email from Carol McGinley telling me about all the various activities she has been involved in, and is able to get out and play her guitar and sing more now – in fact she was going to volunteer to do both at the May Showcase. We all home that you continue to be able to do this Carol. Well, folks, this ends our “visit” for this month, and again, urge you all to email or send me news, so my “Ramblin' with Helen” may continue. Remember, our July/Aug. newsletter will be combined, and be sure and checkout other items elsewhere in this newsletter regarding upcoming CNYBA events, etc. Take care as I do care, until our next visit.
